For all of my insecurities about having celebrities talk about my book in public, I'm a huge fan of the whole endeavour. This whole thing is so unique and it's just an incredible privilege. I talk a lot about this notion of how anxious this makes me, but that's just because I'm a naturally anxious person. The fact that people are passionate about this is really heartening.Īnd, the fact that our public broadcaster dedicates a week of programming to have people talk about books - that's such a miraculous and rare thing. This thing gets pretty intense sometimes, but the fact that people are passionate enough to get intense about books offsets any of the mentions that show up in my Twitter notifications. Is there anything you'd like to say to Twitter this year, something to keep in mind as they watch the show?įeel free to yell at me as much as you like. I'm deeply grateful to be in this kind of company and deeply anxious about how this thing's going to play out. It's kind of a mechanism of attention and spotlight that I'm not used to at all. My very limited experience with Canada Reads for my one previous rodeo is that you're subjected to this kind of very communal form of feedback that exists not only in the panellists's conversations, but also the folks that pop up on Twitter and take this very seriously. I'm equal parts deeply grateful and deeply anxious. How are you feeling about being on Canada Reads again?

I think I've found my own "core" problem and that was largely due to the impact of a couple of the stories/myths used in the book.but the info that Johnston uses in conjunction with the myths/stories is interesting as well and very useful I think, for anyone with poor body image and/or "disordered eating" habits. is a psychologist, a storyteller, and author of Eating in. Walls of worlds bound and waiting for me. The heavy door, the warmth, the light, the old wood floors-the bookstore! Smells of paper and leather and ink. Salvation Army bells, white lights strung in sidewalk trees, bundled shoppers, hunched and hurrying, kicking up little snowdrifts scattered by the wind. Johnson waiting at her door the smell of Avon powder, her smile as she pressed an envelope into my palm-ten dollars and a peppermint candy cane thank you!Įvening now, running downtown. I remember snowmen and igloos and icy trails through the white and wondrous woods. I remember rubber bands and ink stained hands. I feel the canvas newspaper bag on my shoulders, the weight of Sunday's headlines heavy on my mind. Foghorns blowing on the mist-covered bay. I remember racing to dress, struggling with my boots – “Here, don't forget your mittens.” I remember the soft thump of that first footstep, the tracks looking back, and everything new and blanketed in quiet white. So what do you do when the world comes back around the other way, and you’re sitting on a veritable IP gold mine, but fascism’s back and good god, but it loves irony? Much like a lot of British pop-counterculture at the time - 2000 AD, for instance, and Judge Dredd, and the work of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison and many, many others - they were a satire. The servants of the Emperor of Terra were originally something of a caricature of Catholic fascism, the Franco bent and its continental offspring that made its way, eventually, after some twists and turns, into British politics in the 1980s. This puts you in a bit of a pickle, both morally and financially.
